Day 3 Results

Last night was a stunning third round of performances. Our first session opened with three shows: we are guided through the life of entertainer Josephine Baker as she rises to international stardom in Zakiya Iman Markland’s La Négrophilie: A Story Based on The Life of Josephine Baker; two women who have worked together decades have much in common, but everything changes when they disagree about personal improvement in Vince Gatton’s Better; a man suddenly has an impossible decision to make when a psychic reveals exactly when he’ll meet his soulmate and when she’ll leave in Chisa Hutchinson’s CHOOSING LOVE.

After a quick break the second session gave us four more plays: two old friends fast forward through what their lives could have been if they had started dating in college in Reed Arnold’s The Last First Date; we enter the inner monologue, hopes, and fears of a ballgirl at the U.S. Open in Gracie Gardner’s BALLGIRL; we watch as serial killer Mary Ann Cotton lures another victim in Bixby Elliot’s Aquamarine; three coworkers take extreme measures to deal with an office lunch thief in David MacGregor’s Just Desserts.

Tasked with choosing only a few plays to advance to the Saturday finals were dramaturg and SPACE’s Director of Artistic Programs John M. Baker, Playwrights Horizons’ Associate Artistic Director Adam Greenfield, and award winning playwright David Greenspan. After considerable discussion and thought, two short plays were selected for the Saturday Finals.

Congratulations! If you want to see these plays again keep a look out for Saturday’s schedule on our tickets page. More Saturday finalists will be announced throughout the week, so please be sure to check in throughout the week for more updates. And, please check out our full schedule for our other Final 30 performances.

Thank you John M. Baker, Adam Greenfield, and David Greenspan for joining us last night. Making those choices couldn’t have been easy

And thank you Zakiya Iman Markland, Chisa Hutchinson, Reed Arnold, Gracie Gardner, and David MacGregor. It’s an honor to have you as a part of our Final 30, and we can’t wait to see what you write next.
