A BIT ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

When did you start writing plays? If you had a moment where you realized you wanted to write, what was it?

I started writing plays in high school. I had always been more interested in film but didn’t understand the gear. Theatre allowed me to cheat. I could have a character say “we were in a forest,” and the audience would do the work for me. It started as a work around, and then I fell in love with the freedom.

How did you come to write your OOB play? Was there a particular inspiration behind its creation? How has it developed?

I was thinking about spending time alone and all the people you become when you’re left to your own devices. Sometimes the only way to stay sane is to split yourself in two, three, four… I was also in a period where all I could listen to was the type of music they play at department stores.

What are five words that describe who you are as a playwright?

Funny, haunted, horny, slippery, sad.

What/who are some of the major influences on your writing?

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Aleshea Harris, Paula Vogel
Word for Word Performing Arts in San Francisco
DANCENOISE
David Greenspan
My sister Neena (she illustrates my plays)

What’s one fact someone would never guess about you?

I get beat up all the time (I wrote a play about this).

What are some of your favorite plays?

Is God Is by Aleshea Harris
King Lear by William Shakespeare
Evocation to Visible Appearance by Mark Schultz
An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
Plano by Will Arbery
Into the Woods with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine
