1. When did you start writing plays? If you had a moment where you realized you wanted to write, what was it?

I’ve had the instinct to write for as long as I can remember… as soon as I could move a pen, I was putting on plays for my family in the living room. I quickly discovered the greatest thrill of all is hearing my words out loud in front of others. It’s truly terrifying… and exhilarating. I’ve been addicted to the feeling ever since.

2. How did you come to write your OOB play? Was there a particular inspiration behind its creation? How has it developed?

I’ve always been drawn to ruins. The idea of a once mighty civilization disappearing and the structures they’ve created being taken back by nature really captures my imagination. Especially in times where catastrophe seems to be right around the corner, a ruin is strangely comforting to me. Life continues. Things that seemed permanent can change and disappear. I imagine what ruins of our civilization might look like. And I wonder what sort of unexpected things my generation would be nostalgic for if the world completely changed. That was my inspiration for the character of Miguel and his grandchildren who have no memory of today’s world.

3. What are 5 words that describe who you are as a playwright?

Restless, playful, lots of questions.

4. What/who are some of the major influences on your writing?

Whenever I’m feeling stuck and need some inspiration, I can reliably return to my own personal Trinity: Shakespeare, Bob Dylan and David Attenborough.

5. What’s one fact someone would never guess about you?

CATS the musical was the first professional piece of theatre I ever saw. I was obsessed and I WILL go to the mat to defend its artistic integrity to this day. Come at me, haters.

6. What are some of your favorite plays?

Cyrano de Bergerac; Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead; The Last Days of Judas Iscariot

7. Any new projects you’re working on or shameless plugs?

I write an interactive digital series called KARULA’S DREAM SHOW LIVE starring the enormously talented actress/comedian Kim Berrios Lin! We’re doing a performance of KARULA at Solocom hosted by The Pit NYC on 6/6! We also do performances on instagram @karulasdreamshow
