SYNOPSIS

Dwayne and Glen have discovered a gold mine! Not really, but they did discover that if they take a life insurance policy out for $500,000 before they go hunting, and if Glen “accidentally” loses a limb and doesn’t die, the policy will pay out in full. They just need to go to a magical place called NUB CITY, USA!

PLAYWRIGHT’S BIO

Nicholas Hulstine is a Louisville, Kentucky based theatre artist. On stage he’s appeared in Tuesday Night Poker (Theatre Row), Foreign Gothic (FringeNYC), The Dazzle (John Cullum Theater), The Flick (The Alley Theater) and Nobody Bunny and the Golden Age of Animation (Theatre 502). Film credits include My Friend Dahmer, Above Suspicion, The Art of Self Defense, Chopin, Runner and Great Light. His plays include Happyouth (Gene Frankel Theatre), The Track N’ Hole (Prologue Theatre, Chicago), Blue Scatters Most, (The Secret Theatre) and The Geography of Nowhere (The Chain Theatre). He’s the co-founder of the Louisville Fringe Festival. Education: The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, BA The New School, MFA in Playwriting Spalding University.

A BIT ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

1. When did you start writing plays? If you had a moment where you realized you wanted to write, what was it?

I started writing plays while I was in acting school, sometime around 2005. It’s rough getting out of acting school and finding your place, so I wrote plays that my friends and myself could perform.

2. How did you come to write your OOB play? Was there a particular inspiration behind its creation? How has it developed?

I was listening to a story on NPR about insurance agencies in a small town that grant life insurance policies with a dismemberment clause. If the insured person loses a limb and doesn’t die, the policy still pays out in full. I wrote the play holed up in a tiny motel room in Hazard, Kentucky while I was working on a film.

3. What are five words that describe who you are as a playwright?

Spatula, cattywampus, umbrella, apoplectic, acquiesce.

4. What/who are some of the major influences on your writing?

Shepard, Letts, Durang, Miller, Ionesco, Pinter, O’Neil, Inge, Williams

5. What’s one fact someone would never guess about you?

I have a twin brother who has always been at least 5 inches taller me.

6. What are some of your favorite plays?

The Bald Soprano, August: Osage County, A View From the Bridge, Largo Desolato, anything Pinter, anything Shepard

7. Any new projects you’re working on or shameless plugs?

My one act play “how long before our hearts explode?” is going up at the magnetic theatre in Asheville, NC in August 2023.
